Abstract

This study aims to assess the usefulness of the COMET vocational competence model theory in enhancing vocational skills among tourism major students at Chinese vocational colleges. The investigation, which employs a quantitative research approach, polls 50 students and 50 professionals From Hangzhou, Yantai, Xianyang three vocational colleges. The findings show that participants have a strong theoretical comprehension, with 88% demonstrating Fair/Good or Good/Excellent knowledge. However, there are difficulties in practically applying theoretical information, as 72% evaluate their application as Fair/Good or Good/Excellent, with some expressing difficulties in translating knowledge into practical circumstances. Problem-solving (68%) and teamwork (68%) have moderate to high levels of confidence, whereas leadership and digital competence are ranked lower, at 46% Fair/Good or Good/Excellent. Professional feedback reveals a reasonable familiarity with COMET (70%) and notes issues in curriculum alignment, implying the need for competency-based evaluations and increased industry engagement. The study gives empirical insights into the COMET model's success in theoretical knowledge. Still, it emphasizes improving practical application and specialized action-oriented abilities in tourism education.
