A Systematic Review of the Application of Flow Theory in Educational Research

This paper systematically reviews flow theory, which describes the optimal immersive learning state and underpins research on intrinsic motivation and deep learning. Against the digital education transformation, the theory has been widely applied in diverse educational contexts. Based on bibliometric and literature analysis, this study sorts global educational flow research into three evolutionary stages and summarizes its core research topics. It further highlights major limitations of existing studies regarding theoretical localization, research methodology, negative-flow exploration and instructional practice. Finally, it proposes future research directions in theoretical innovation, methodological renewal, thematic expansion and practical application, providing references for intelligent immersive teaching and learning.References
