Abstract

This study aims to explore how students' employability skills and competitiveness can be enhanced through educational interventions in vocational institutions. By quantitatively analysing survey data from 1,850 students in 10 vocational institutions in China, this paper assessed the effects of five independent variables, namely, skills training programmes, teacher competence, resource inputs, students' motivation to learn and policy support, on students' employability and competitiveness. Analyses conducted using SPSS 20 included descriptive statistics, reliability and validity tests, exploratory factor analysis and multiple linear regression. The results of the study showed that all independent variables had a significant positive effect on students' employment rate, employment quality, career matching and career development ability, with skills training programmes having the most significant effect. In addition, the study discusses the limitations of current vocational education practices and suggests directions for future research. The strategic recommendations in this paper provide specific guidance for vocational education policy makers and institutional administrators with the aim of improving the socio-economic returns to vocational education and the career development prospects of students.
