Abstract

Language identity refers to the complex interaction between an individual's sense of self and their linguistic affiliations. It is a complex phenomenon, and as an important aspect of human identity, understanding its complexity and underlying factors is essential. It includes the way people perceive, construct, and express their identity through the use of language. The purpose of this paper is to explore the multi-dimension of language identity, the cultural significance of language identity and the factors that affect the formation and evolution of language identity. Critically analyze existing language identity research, assess its strengths and weaknesses, and provide persuasive arguments for further research. Topics covered include situations and objects of communication, language attitudes and expectations, and language policies.
